Foot problems can effect even everyday activities in our daily lives. Some foot conditions can be cured quite easily, others may be more serious, such as having to amputate a toe.
Our feet are the foundation of our bodies and should be cared for properly.
Teaching a diabetic person basic foot care is very important as it is part of treating the disease. Diabetics are more likely to get infections in their feet to the level that amputations may be required if adequate care and surveillance is not undertaken.
Many diabetics have nerve damage and numbness in their feet and toes, so if they get cut or injured they will not feel or be aware of it.
Toenail infections may set in. The injuries are very difficult to heal because of the diabetes and circulatory problems. Looking after our feet even if we are not diabetic is important and just as you look after your hair you should look after your feet.
Any elderly person who has foot problems will tell you how they wish they had looked after their feet in their younger days. So take action now before it is too late and consult a foot specialist if necessary.
Teaching and advising the diabetic person about basic foot care
You have to let them understand that losing a foot is not just what could happen but also something that will happen if proper care and attention is not given regularly. Inform them that their feet have to always be clean and dry. Soaking the feet is not recommended because there may be bacteria in the water and if there is broken skin, infection may set in. Toenail fungus treatment is advised immediately as soon as it is detected and before the toe nails turn thick or yellow
Cut toenails straight across with proper toenail clippers and don’t make them too short so that the skin won’t get cut accidentally or cause a hanging nail. Each day do a examination on the feet to look for any cuts, scrapes or injuries. If you see something unusual don’t try and treat it yourself but call your doctor for medical attention.
Completely avoid walking barefoot, even in your home. Always wear slippers, shoes and always wear socks with your foot wear. Ensure that the foot wear fits properly and is not tight.
