Discolored Toenails and Nail Deformities

Deformed toenails are a nightmare especially in the summer. Everyone else is in pretty sandals and vibrant nail varnish and your feet are all crammed into sweaty trainers or something similar.

So how do we get ugly nails and what can be done to improve things?

Deformed toenails are mostly caused by fungal infections. However, fungal toenail infections are not always the reason deformed toenails develop.

They can become permanently deformed as a result of trauma.  For example if something heavy has dropped on your toenail, it can grow back deformed instead of straight and smooth. The deformity can even sometimes remain permanent depending on whether the root is affected or not.

Deformed toenails are much more obvious and noticeable to the one who is suffering. It has psychological and emotional connotations. Others may not notice at all unless it is pointed out to them, but for the sufferer it stands out a mile.

A deformed toe nail may also be caused by bacterial infections also by hereditary conditions. These conditions should be checked by a doctor. Some infections can be treatable while others are not, so it is best to know what you are dealing with. A toenail which is deep yellow, brown or bluish are considered to be unhealthy and need care and attention. The causes for this can be injury, disease or skin cancer. The odd colour is often due to a small collection of blood which is trapped under the surface of the nail. Nails which have been injured can be soaked in warm water to relieve pain.

Here are some tips and advice on treating an ingrown toenail:

Don’t delay an ingrown toenail treatment, you don’t have to cope with the pain.

There are answers and they are simple, if it becomes more aggravated, the treatment becomes more difficult and the infection can spread and get nastier.

For a diabetic person and those individuals who have poor circulation, an ingrown toenail can lead to a toe amputation if ignored for a long time. Get treatment when it is still in the early stages and a minor annoyance!

Don’t worry you’re not alone as we all have experienced an ingrowing toenail at one point in our lives.

The in grown toenail curves into the skin causing redness, pain, irritation and discomfort. This condition can also occur from shoe pressure and from nails that aren’t cut properly.

Possible Solutions :

  • Try a shoe with bigger toe room or maybe a open toe.
  • Clean the area with antibacterial soap and disinfectant at least once a day. Reduce the pressure on the skin by trimming down the toenail with sterile instruments and when it starts to grow again push the skin away from the edge.

IF you are unsure contact a doctor or your local hospital for advice or medical care. Once you have told your doctor he may prescribe antibiotics to stop tany infection. If however, it is a rare case you may need IV antibiotics to prevent toe amputation.  Please seek medical help early. Trimming the toenails alone may not be enough to prevent significant infection.
